As far as I can remember, I’ve always felt a burning passion to dance and perform. It’s far from the safest career path for a young Singaporean, but despite the overwhelming odds years of hard work, perseverance and determination has converted my passion into a sustainable career that today enriches and empowers the lives of many.
Here is the story of how I progressed from being a struggling artist with no means to the leader of 4 teams of female dancers in Asia, as well as the first Asian Street Latin performer and instructor to conduct regular classes in Europe, Asia and Oceania.
I was exposed to many different genres of dance from a very tender age, but none touched my soul as much as the Street Latin styles Salsa, Bachata and Kizomba. Against my family’s wishes, I left school at the age of 17 to pursue my dream of become a full-time Steet Latin dancer. With no monetary support, I was faced with crushing financial pressures and was forced to take on many different part-time jobs to make ends meet. Besides that, the never-ending pressures from my family and friends also made me question the wisdom of my unorthodox decision too many times to count.
Despite all that, I stuck to my resolve and continued forging my own path off the beaten track. I was blessed with good friends in the dance scene who helped me pick up my first paid jobs as a dancer, and with each opportunity I acquired new skills and experience teaching and performing. Before I knew it, I was making enough money to drop my various part-time jobs and dedicated my full efforts to honing my craft. In time, I also received international exposure and since then have had the opportunity to travel the world teaching, performing and meeting new people whilst sharing my passion for dance.
Being a dancer is not just about the lights, costumes and glamour, though - for me, the most poignant part of my job is the ability to touch and enrich the lives of other women. A dance class may seem like an insignificant part of someone’s life, but I have witnessed time and time again the immense effect it has had on my students. Besides having fun and getting a good work-out, dancing endows my students with the confidence and self-love needed to be at ease with their body and subsequently, to feel empowered in their career and relationships.
Since then, I have made inspiring and empowering other women through dance my life’s work. I hope to continue meeting more ladies from around the world to share my passion and dream with, and am extremely excited about what lies ahead for me and my BLDC teams.
If you have not tried dancing before, stop whatever you are doing and try it. I guarantee you will never look back.
